Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton, a former Iowa State player from the 2019-20 season, posted on X on March 17, 2024, advising college basketball fans to "make one bracket and stand on it" ahead of the NCAA Division I men's and women's tournaments.[1]
The 2024 NCAA men's tournament begins with first-round games on Thursday, March 21, featuring 68 teams in four regions leading to the Final Four on April 6 and championship on April 8 in Glendale, Arizona.[2] Haliburton, in an interview with Fox News Digital, criticized fans entering multiple brackets, saying, "I think it’s just so lame that people are like, ‘Oh, I made this many brackets.’ Like, dang, how many brackets do you get? That’s not how it works."[1]
He endorsed one exception: one bracket picking an alma mater unrealistically to win alongside a logical one, but affirmed his choice of Iowa State, his alma mater, to claim the national championship in his single bracket. "I didn’t blink when I made that decision," Haliburton said.[1]
Iowa State earned a No. 2 seed in the East Region after a 27-10 season, including a 13-5 mark to tie for first in Big 12 regular-season play and a runner-up finish in the conference tournament.[2][3] The Cyclones face No. 15 seed South Dakota State in the first round on March 21 at CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska.[2]
Haliburton cited Iowa State's strength in the Big 12 -- highlighted by a regular-season win over then-No. 3 Arizona and a narrow conference tournament final loss to Houston -- and their strong play on neutral courts as reasons for confidence.[1][3] Arizona defeated Iowa State 86-85 on January 22 with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.[4]
Haliburton is partnering with Reese's on its Bracket Busting Campaign, which encourages fans to share busted brackets on social media using @Reeses and #ForAReesesSweeps for chances to win free products or tickets to the men's or women's Final Four and championships.[1]
He also joined New York Liberty's Breanna Stewart, former NBA player Richard Jefferson and ESPN analyst Andraya Carter for a Bracket Summit to share picks.[1]
