John Fury says relationship with son Tyson "destroyed" over Usyk fight decisions

John Fury, father and former trainer of British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, stated that his relationship with his son is "destroyed."[1]

The comments came during an appearance on the Playbook Boxing show, where John Fury attributed the rift to Tyson's decisions to fight Oleksandr Usyk twice despite his advice against the bouts.[1] Usyk, the Ukrainian southpaw and current undisputed heavyweight champion, defeated Fury by split decision in their first meeting on May 18, 2024, at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.[2][3]

John Fury said he "begged and prayed" with Tyson before the initial Usyk fight, noting that Fury had been cut during a full training camp and needed more recovery time than the three weeks provided before another camp.[1] The rematch occurred on December 21, 2024, also in Riyadh, with Usyk winning by unanimous decision.[2][3]

Following the second loss, Tyson Fury announced his retirement from boxing in early January 2025 via social media, stating: "Hi everybody, I'm going to make this short and sweet. I'd like to announce my retirement from boxing... Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody, see you on the other side."[1][4]

In January 2026, Fury announced plans to return to the ring later that year.[1] John Fury expressed doubt, saying his son "is past his best" and surrounded by excessive praise.[1]

John Fury also criticized Tyson's trainer SugarHill Steward, calling him "a gym sweeper" and unlike the late Emanuel Steward.[1]

Fury is scheduled to face Canadian heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov in April 2026.[1]
